Hace unos doce mil cuatrocientos años, en la sierra sur del Perú, en Cuncaicha bajo el Coropuna —a cuatro mil cuatrocientos ochenta metros, en la cuenca de Pucuncho, Arequipa—, el aire es fino y el frío muerde los huesos. Cuncaicha es un abrigo de roca; Pucuncho, un taller a cielo abierto unos metros más abajo. Ya hay ocupación robusta en Cuncaicha. En el taller de Pucuncho hay puntas de cola de pez de hace unos doce mil ochocientos a once mil quinientos años.

El trabajo diario era cazar vicuña, guanaco y taruca; despostar con obsidiana, andesita y jaspe locales; raspar cueros para abrigo. El techo ahumado y la basura del piso leen como base residencial al menos parte del año. Más adelante, en el Holoceno temprano, personas enterradas en Cuncaicha muestran química de cuerpos criados en altura: hacia hace nueve a ocho mil quinientos años hay señales de residencia permanente en la puna.

El uso en el Pleistoceno final está claro; si ya vivían todo el año en ese frío extremo sigue en discusión. Algunos ven campamento base intenso; otros mantienen modelos estacionales para los niveles más antiguos. Lo que no se discute: el Perú arcaico incluyó gente que aprendió a cazar y abrigarse en uno de los ambientes habitados más duros de la Tierra, milenios antes de cualquier ciudad.
