STORY

Version 1

Hace unos once mil años, en abrigos de la sierra peruana, la noche baja de cero y el viento roba el calor del cuerpo. En Guitarrero, textiles y cordeles de fibra vegetal —esteras y cuerdas de agave y bromeliáceas datados directamente— muestran cómo se abrigaban. Postes y clavijas de madera encajan con paredes de cuero. En Asana, Telarmachay y Cuncaicha, raspadores, piedras de bruñir y ocre hablan del mismo oficio: pieles raspadas, teñidas, convertidas en ropa y, quizá, en tiendas contra el hielo. El olor a cuero húmedo y a humo llena el abrigo.

En la costa el clima es más suave, pero la garúa moja y enfría. En Paloma, fogones de ramitas dentro de la casa daban calor; fogones de canto afuera cocinaban. Antes del algodón, la gente se envolvía en esteras de junco, totora o maguey y en pieles de camélido o de lobo marino. Más de cincuenta casas domésticas en Paloma cuentan ese abrigo cotidiano: estera fría al amanecer, fuego chico para los pies, olor a junco y a sal. El algodón vendría después; aquí el vestuario temprano es fibra vegetal y cuero.

Misma necesidad humana: no perder calor hacia el suelo ni hacia el aire. Menús distintos de material según el piso ecológico. Sin fuego, cuero y fibra, la permanencia en la puna y la aldea costera se caen. El abrigo silencioso —manos que tejen, raspan y encienden— hizo posible el mapa arcaico entero.
