Hace unos tres mil doscientos años, en la costa del Soconusco —Chiapas y la frontera con Guatemala—, aldeas Mokaya ya conocían cerámica fina, casas de prestigio y un patio de pelota. El Pacífico no esperó lecciones del Golfo para innovar. Vasijas, estilos y motivos viajaron en ambas direcciones: obsidiana, productos de la zona del cacao, espejos de mineral de hierro, ollas elegantes que brillaban al sol salado.

En orillas como Cantón Corralito, estilos del Golfo y del Pacífico se rozaban hasta formar comunidades híbridas: intercambio y convivencia, no conquista colonial. Mokaya evoca a la gente del maíz; es un nombre útil para imaginar aldeas, no un reino único con fronteras pintadas. Escucha la brisa salada, el golpe de la pelota, el brillo de una olla delgada. El Golfo y el Pacífico conversaban temprano, con respeto y curiosidad.
