Hace más de dos mil años, en Tres Zapotes, Veracruz, una estela guardó una fecha del calendario de cuenta larga: el año que hoy leemos como treinta y dos antes de nuestra era. Era el crepúsculo largo del mundo olmeca, no el mediodía de San Lorenzo. En esa piedra hay signos de una tradición del Istmo; son importantes, pero no traducimos aquí un relato inventado. El calendario floreció en un borde occidental donde la gente seguía construyendo y experimentando con el tiempo.

Más temprano, cerca del área de San Lorenzo, alguien cinceló sobre un bloque —el de Cascajal— sesenta y dos signos grabados. Imagina el golpe del cincel, el polvo fino, la sombra de quien mira esos trazos sin poder leerlos del todo. La piedra y el tallado parecen antiguos; el significado sigue callado. No hubo un abecedario olmeca resuelto ni un primer libro cerrado: hubo manos que grabaron, ojos que miraron, y un silencio que aún merece respeto.

En la escuela decimos con modestia: las sociedades del Golfo tejieron símbolos ricos y ayudaron a preparar caminos de signos y calendarios.
