Antes de pirámides, ya había respeto. En cuevas y abrigos, la gente buscó refugio… y también lugares especiales para pedir por el agua, la tierra y los antepasados. No inventamos sumos sacerdotes para bandas pequeñas ni relatos de sacrificio sensacionalistas: hablamos de ofrendas modestas, danzas, cuidado de los muertos y gratitud cotidiana.

En aldeas tempranas, a veces se enterraba a alguien bajo el piso de la casa, para tener cerca la memoria. Conchas, vasijas y comida podían acompañar gestos rituales cuando crecía el intercambio. En la costa de Chiapas, un juego de pelota temprano muestra que el juego también podía ser social y ceremonial, no solo deporte de tarde libre.

Las grandes religiones de cueva florecen con más claridad en épocas posteriores; para tiempos arcaicos, las afirmaciones van con mesura. Aun así, el asombro es antiguo: una ofrenda junto a un manantial, una danza en la orilla de la laguna, una tumba doméstica con semillas.

La tierra no era solo despensa: era relación. Los niños aprendían a pedir permiso al cruzar un umbral de piedra, y el silencio de la cueva guardaba más que sueño: guardaba agradecimiento y pertenencia.

Al salir de la cueva, la luz ciega un instante. Queda el eco del agradecimiento, suave como agua en la palma.
