STORY

Version 1

En las lagunas del Soconusco, en la costa del Pacífico de Chiapas, familias antiguas comían almejas de pantano, ostras y peces. Conchas sobre conchas formaron montículos: no eran «basura» solamente, sino lugares con fogones, suelos y visitas de temporada, donde se oía el chapoteo y se olía a marea.

Los grupos Chantuto, durante milenios de vida arcaica, dependieron mucho de esos recursos acuáticos. Con el tiempo, también cuidaron huertos tierra adentro. En sitios como Tlacuachero, el tipo y el tamaño de los peces cambian a lo largo de los siglos: la dieta se transforma cuando cambia el entorno o la elección de las gentes. Hacia el final de esa etapa, los montículos de concha pierden fuerza y crecen aldeas con montículos de tierra y más cultivo.

En las costas del Golfo —esteros y manglares de Tabasco y Veracruz— también se comía pez, tortuga, mariscos y plantas de humedal, a menudo mezclados con los primeros jardines. El detalle de montículos de concha tan bien fechados como en el Pacífico es más escaso; por eso contamos esa orilla con modestia, sin inventar secuencias iguales.

Las costas fueron caminos de ideas y bienes mucho antes de las grandes ciudades. Sentir el lodo entre los dedos y oír el viento salado: así sonaba la vida junto al mar.
