NARRATION

Version 1

Did you know that in present-day Argentina a farmer discovered the first fossils of Argentinosaurus after mistaking a giant bone for petrified wood? This titanosaur sauropod inhabited floodplain environments of the Huincul Formation around 90 million years ago in the Late Cretaceous. As a herbivore, evidence from its teeth and relatives indicates it stripped tough plant material using a long neck to reach high or low foliage. Known from incomplete remains including huge vertebrae, part of the sacrum, ribs and limb bones, adult size is estimated at roughly 35 metres long and 70 tonnes, though uncertainty is high due to missing parts. Highly pneumatic bones reduced skeletal weight, a memorable adaptation for gigantism. These fossils from Argentina reveal the scale of titanosaurs without implying their full ancient range.
