At Qarqar on the Orontes in northern Syria, 853 BCE, the Neo-Assyrian king Shalmaneser III met a Syrian–Levantine coalition that included Damascus, the kingdom of Israel, and Arab camel troops—the first clear historical mention of Arabs as a distinct military contingent. Assyrian inscriptions boast of vast enemy numbers and of iron-armed infantry and cavalry pressing west; the coalition answered with chariots, spears, and desert mounts along the river corridor. The fighting checked Assyria’s westward push for a time even if Shalmaneser’s annals claimed triumph. Qarqar shows how smaller Levantine states could still combine to blunt an expanding Iron Age empire—and how the military map of the Near East already stretched from the Tigris to Arabian camel corps.
