STORY

Version 1

Near Kadesh on the Orontes, on the modern Syria–Lebanon frontier, c. 1274 BCE, Ramesses II’s Egyptian army met the Hittite Empire of Muwatalli II in what is remembered as the largest known Bronze Age chariot battle. Hittite chariots struck first after Egyptian scouts were deceived; Ramesses’ camp nearly collapsed before reinforcements stiffened the line and the field settled into a grinding, inconclusive fight of wheels, spears, and dust along the river. Neither empire destroyed the other. The shock of the campaign, however, pushed both courts toward diplomacy, and the later Egyptian–Hittite treaty stands among the earliest surviving international peace agreements. Kadesh mattered less as a clean knockout than as the moment chariot empires learned the cost of fighting to a bloody standstill on a contested frontier.
