Near Megiddo in the Jezreel Valley of Canaan, c. 1457 BCE, Pharaoh Thutmose III forced a Canaanite coalition—led from Kadesh and gathered at the fortress of Megiddo—into the first battle whose tactics and logistics are told in a detailed contemporary narrative. Egyptian scribal accounts describe how the king debated three approaches through the hills, then drove his army along the risky Aruna road so the chariots could burst onto the plain before the enemy expected them. Bronze-age war chariots rattled over dry ground; composite bows and spears decided the clash once the coalition broke and fled into the fortress. A long siege followed until Megiddo surrendered and tribute poured south. The victory reasserted Egyptian dominance across the Levant and showed how organized chariot warfare and supply could hold an empire together far from the Nile.
