Hace varios milenios, en la costa central del Perú, en las lomas de niebla cerca de Ancón, cada invierno austral la niebla del Pacífico moja las laderas del desierto. Brota hierba. Aparecen arbustos, raíces y semillas. Las lomas se vuelven islas temporales de vida en un mundo de piedra y sal. El aire huele a tierra mojada y a verde nuevo. Hubo más de cincuenta campamentos, canteras y talleres de invierno. Cuando la niebla se retiraba en verano, esas mismas pendientes volvían a ser desierto pelado.

La gente hacía campamentos de temporada. Recolectaba plantas —combustible, remedio, parientes silvestres de cultivos posteriores—, juntaba caracoles de tierra que explotan en invierno y cazaba animales atraídos por el verde: guanaco, venado, zorro. Desde aldeas de costa, forrajeros hacían viajes a las lomas. En La Yerba, por ejemplo, partes de guanaco sugieren sitios de caza tierra adentro del pueblo. Los niños corren entre la hierba mojada; las manos llenan cestos de raíces.

En la costa sur, esas verdes de invierno fueron críticas cuando el mar frío hacía más predecible la estación. El reloj de la niebla marcaba cuándo se podía vivir de los cerros: llegar con el frío húmedo, quedarse mientras hay verde, bajar cuando el sol seca la ladera. Sin ese latido estacional, la movilidad arcaica de la costa se entiende menos. Vivir el invierno era seguir la niebla hasta la isla verde y oler la tierra antes de que vuelva el polvo.
